We're required by law to identify countries where you and any Persons of Significant Control (PSCs) may have a tax obligation. Confirming your tax residency status in app takes less than two minutes.
What tax residency means for your business
Tax residency is simply the country or countries where you are legally required to pay tax or file tax returns. If you are a sole trader, this is usually where you live and earn your income. If you run a limited company, it is generally where your company is registered or where you manage daily operations. A limited company can be tax resident in another country if it's managed or controlled from there, even if it's registered in the UK.
Most business owners only pay tax in the UK, but we still need a verified record on file for everyone.
What to do if you see an in-app prompt
If a prompt pops up when you open the app, we need to collect or refresh your tax residency details. Completing the check clears the prompt straight away.
If you're unsure about your tax position, we recommend checking the official GOV.UK guidance on tax residency or speaking with a qualified accountant.
Finding your Tax Identification Number (TIN)
When you update your details, you'll need to enter your Tax Identification Number (TIN) for each country where you pay tax outside of the UK. Don't worry, providing this won't change your tax status or mean you owe extra tax.
If you're unsure about your tax position or residency status, we recommend speaking with a qualified accountant or checking the official GOV.UK tax residency guidance.
If you're experiencing technical issues in the app, send us a message in app and we can connec you with one of the team who'll be able to help you.
Why this applies even if you only pay tax in the UK
UK regulations require all regulated financial providers to hold a formal self-certification for every active account. Even if you operate entirely within the UK, we still need you to confirm your status in the app. If you pay tax outside the UK or in multiple countries, you can easily select all relevant jurisdictions, and you'll be prompted to provide the necessary information in app.
What happens if you don't provide the information
Providing this information is mandatory under UK law. If you don't complete the tax residency screens when prompted, access to your app will remain restricted until your details are submitted. Restricting access prevents you from making outgoing payments or checking live balances, but your account is still live. You can still receive payments and use your card. The quickest way to access the app is to provide the requested information; it shouldn't take more than 2 minutes.
If we don't have a record of your tax residency information, we won't be able to switch you to an upgraded account.
