When you apply for an account, we’ll ask you to select your business type. Choosing the right category ensures your account is set up correctly and that our tax tools work perfectly for your specific needs. 🥳 Most applications are processed within the same business day when the correct business type is selected.
Self-employed
This is the most common category for sole traders. You should likely choose this if you run your own business and receive payments directly from customers or clients.
Choose this if: You're a freelancer, consultant, hairdresser, or shop owner who files a Self Assessment tax return with HMRC.
Self-employed CIS
This category is specifically for those working in the construction industry under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
Choose this if: You’re a builder, electrician, or labourer and your contractors deduct CIS tax from your payments.
Benefit: Selecting this ensures the app tracks your CIS statements and tax deductions accurately.
Furnished holiday lets
Choose this option if you rent out a furnished property as a short-term holiday home, such as through Airbnb or a holiday cottage.
Choose this if: Your property is available to rent for at least 210 days a year and is actually let for at least 105 of those days.
Note: HMRC has specific rules for holiday lets that differ from standard rentals, so please verify your property qualifies before selecting this.
UK property business
This covers long-term residential or commercial rentals, such as renting out a house or flat to tenants on a standard tenancy agreement.
Choose this if: You earn income from UK property that isn't a short-term holiday let. This helps you categorise rental income correctly for your tax returns.
Note: Picking the right type now is important. If you choose the wrong category, you might find that certain tax features in the app don't align with your requirements later on.
